Indian citizens living in Brazil are advised to urgently replace their handwritten passports with Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs). As machine readable passports are mandatory for travelling, foreign governments may deny Visa or entry to any person traveling on a non-Machine Readable Passport.
- The Government of India has been issuing MRPs since 2OOl. The Passports, however, issued before 2OO1 and particularly those issued during mid-1990s with a validity of 20 years will fall in the category of non-MRPs.
- Indian citizens residing in Brazil and holding such non-MRPs are advised to contact Embassy of India, Brasilia and CGI, Sao Paulo for re-issue of their passports immediately in order to avoid any inconvenience in obtaining valid visa or international travel.
